Tennoji Temple

Founded in the late 13th century during the Kamakura period, Tennoji Temple stands as one of Tokyo’s most venerable and historic temples. Stepping into the temple grounds, you are immediately embraced by a profound stillness that feels worlds away from the city’s hustle and bustle. The air here is thick with history, preserved within the lush greenery of the surrounding Yanaka Cemetery. The heart of the temple is graced by a magnificent bronze statue of the seated Buddha, cast in 1690. Known as a symbol of Yanaka, its gentle, meditative expression has offered solace to travelers for centuries. Tennoji Temple also enshrines Bishamonten, the deity of warriors and one of the Yanaka Seven Lucky Gods. While the temple is peaceful year-round, it comes alive with vibrant energy during the New Year, as locals flock here to pray for good fortune and protection in the year ahead.
